Job Search Attire

Your skills, experience, and personal qualities are very important in your search for a job or internship. Making sure you look the part helps the recruiter focus on why you are a good candidate, rather than being distracted by a less-than-professional appearance. Looking professional will not ensure you a job, but an under-dressed or poorly groomed person does not portray an image that gets the right kind of attention. Looking professional is a combination of simple grooming and professional attire. There are some basics that apply to both men and women.

The following tips provide the basic, conservative, “can't-go-wrong” suggestions to make sure you present a professional appearance.

General Guidelines—First Impressions Count

Select apparel, fragrances, jewelry, hairstyle, etc. that do not detract from your professional image. The recruiter's attention should be focused on what you say and on your qualifications.

·   Apparel should be clean and neatly pressed. It should fit well and remain in place while sitting or walking.

·   Make sure your hair is clean, neat and professionally styled.

·   Fragrance should never be strong. When in doubt, do not wear perfume or cologne.

·   Wear conservative, clean, and polished shoes.

·   Less is more. Keep your look simple and professional until you learn about the company’s dress code and work environment.

Guidelines For Men's Attire

·  ·   Wear a matching suit in navy, black or gray (pinstripe or solid) or wear a navy
blazer and dark gray dress slacks.
·   Wear white or a light blue dress shirt that contrasts with the jacket and tie.
·   Ties can vary, but avoid very bright colors and gaudy/distracting designs.
·   Socks should be calf-length or above the calf and a dark blue, black or gray
    color.
·    Select lace-up (not slip-on) dress shoes that are a dark color and blend with
    pants.

·   Minimize jewelry. Wear a dress watch and no more than one ring per hand.

·   Cologne should never be strong. A fragrance can cause an allergic reaction or offend the recruiter. When in doubt, do not wear cologne.

Guidelines For Women's Attire

·  ·   Select a skirted suit, conservatively tailored pantsuit or dress that draws the eye to
your face. Skirts are traditionally knee-length, but those slightly shorter or longer
    are also acceptable.
·   Keep it simple! Add accessories to express your personality and accentuate your
best features. A scarf or simple necklace is an effective way to focus on your face.
Always wear hose, plainly styled (no patterns), sheer (not opaque), and in a neutral
color. Carry an extra pair of hose.
·   Wear flat shoes or low pumps in a color that complements your suit/dress and that are clean and polished. Avoid open-toed shoes.

·   Use natural-looking makeup and clear nail polish.
